Beryl Maud Surridge was born on 23rd September 1938, to Mary and Arthur Baldwin. She was the second eldest of six. From an early age, Beryl had to overcome disability, following a stroke and polio, and this she achieved to her most. She met and married Clifford Surridge and they had one son, Paul.

Beryl, despite only having the use of one arm, learnt to drive, becoming one of the first people in Wales to make use of the government’s Motability scheme. This gave her even greater independence, and took a part-time job working for ASDA.

She helped care for Cliff after he suffered a stroke in 1997, until his passing in 2009 in Medurst residential home, in Crosskeys. Where she also spent the last few years of her life, happy and surrounded by people who care for her.
